1. Sinéad O’Connor
Probably the most famous ban occurred in 1992. Singer Sinéad
O’Connor was forbade from ever appearing on "SNL" again after she ripped up a
photo of Pope John Paul II while singing an a capella version of Bob Marley’s “War.”
An audience member then tried to charge the stage and had to be taken away by
security, according to Lorne Michaels. O’Connor was ahead of her time, protesting abuse by the Catholic church (the camera zoomed in because she had held up a picture of a hungry
child during rehearsals). The act stunned producers, who saw her switcheroo as
a betrayal.
