Perhaps it was an attempt to show that not all terrorists have facial hair, but the U.K.'s Daily Mail missed the mark big time when reporting on an attack by a "clean-shaven white man" on a mosque early Monday morning.
The 48-year-old suspect deliberately drove a white van into a crowd outside the Muslim Welfare House in London's Finsbury Park neighborhood, a stone's throw away from the mosque. One man has died and several were taken to hospital with serious injuries, according to the BBC.
One witness saw the suspect try to make a run for it and was able to catch him.
"When the guy came out from his van he wanted to escape, run away and he was saying 'I want to kill Muslims. I want to kill Muslims," the eye witness recalled.
"I hit him on his stomach... and then me and the other guys... we held him to the ground until he couldn't move. We stopped him until the police came."
Another witness told the BBC that the suspect yelled, "Kill me, I've done my job."
People started to beat the suspect as they held him to the ground until the mosque's imam came outside and said, "Don't hit him, hand him over to the police, pin him down."
Locals describe the neighborhood as "proudly multicultural," and say the biggest problem they run into is which professional football team to root for. Those who are Muslim are currently observing Ramadan, which ends June 24.
London Mayor Sadiq Khan made a statement following the attack, the latest in a string of violence at the hands of extremists.
"While this appears to be an attack on a particular community, like the terrible attacks in Manchester, Westminster and London Bridge it is also an assault on all our shared values of tolerance, freedom and respect," Khan said.
The dictionary defines a terrorist as "a person who uses unlawful violence and intimidation, especially against civilians, in the pursuit of political aims." Tonight's terrorist suspect did just that, and he was a clean-shaven white man.
