Known as the best player in the NBA, LeBron James is obviously a coveted player for any team. Fresh off a championship loss to the Golden State Warriors, James announced yesterday that he’s taking the plunge and leaving the Cleveland Cavaliers (again) for the Los Angeles Lakers for a four-year, $153.3 million contract.
This is pretty big news, given James’s notoriety. News outlets were probably bringing the claws out to get their pens down first -- but they didn’t factor in Chrissy Teigen’s amateur journalistic ingenuity.
LeBron’s announcement officially came from his agency, Klutch Sports Group, on the evening of July 1.
Most websites blew up with their own coverage immediately after, but little did they know that Teigen had technically broken the news almost a day earlier, just under the guise of her own random boredom.
Following this tweet, from the wee hours of July 1, Teigen went ahead with her “rumor,” i.e. that James was sneaking around with a Lakers jersey in downtown LA. What really drives home the whole “I’m making this up” vibe is the photo she posted, which is supposed to be James in a car.
Considering the obvious absurdity of the photo and Teigen’s tendency to embellish, we were all led to believe that this was just another of her antics.
And then the announcement happened, and Teigen claimed her credit.
She’s since welcomed James with open arms and gave him advice for moving to La La Land, which is fair since she was the only one paying attention to him at first.
Maybe LeBron will be the next guest at a Teigen-sponsored dinner party.
