This past Sunday, news broke that José Fernández, a 24-year-old pitching phenom who played for the Miami Marlins, died in a boating accident. The sports world was devastated. Fernández quickly rose from a humble start in Cuba to become a top prospect in the league, and many slated him to go down in history as one of baseball’s best. The former Rookie of the Year averaged 12.5 strikeouts per 9 innings, one of the greatest lines ever recorded. His efficiency was even more impressive. At a strikeout rate of 31.2%, no one in history was better. His future was beyond bright. An expected Cy Young nominee, the athlete was a role model and a star. He will be missed by fans everywhere.
