Every woman wears underwear. Shouldn’t we shop for underwear
through a company who truly believes their product is for everyone?
The Aerie brand continues to be a leader in inclusivity with
the diverse and beautiful models they use in their advertising and on their
website. A pioneer in the body positivity movement, the lingerie branch of
American Eagle Outfitters stopped retouching their photos in 2014. Now, they not
only display models with “real” bodies, but they also have models with insulin
pumps, ostomy bags, arm crutches and more. This is a major leap forward for
people who haven't felt represented by the fashion world.
Even better, Aerie also sells a line of adaptive clothing
accessories as part of their Abilitee line, from insulin pump belts to ostomy
bag covers. There are also cath clips, soft sleeves to cover IVs and cute bikini
underwear that fastens at the sides. Aerie isn’t just talking a big game with
their models -- they’re delivering on it. Doesn’t every woman deserve to
have adorable panties?
Understandably, reaction has been enthusiastic online:
Not only are customers loving it, but the brand has been
recognized by advocacy groups like Suffering the Silence:
This comes as a wave of major retailers are offering
adaptive clothing for people with different needs, like Target, Zappos and Lands' End.
In a statement about their #AerieREAL campaign, the retailer said, “Aerie
recognizes there is still work to be done and understands the importance of
challenging the stereotypical standards of beauty, which helps give its
customers a voice.” Giving a voice to those who have previously been silent speaks
volumes about the company.
Hopefully, Aerie’s inclusiveness with help bring momentum to
the whole fashion industry. We all deserve clothes that fit, flatter and make
us feel good, no matter our size or medical diagnosis.
